One thing I have noticed about leaders (and has been backed up by lots of research) is that leaders are lifelong learners. They find opportunities for self-improvement by reading, listening to others, taking seminars, reading blogs and more.
Much of leadership development is self-development. Think of it this way: The instrument of a musician is mastery of the instrument, the instrument of the leader is mastery of self.
On that note, I would like to take some time to relay some of my favorite books on Leadership. Most of these books are available in audio format as well. I have read most in the last year, but a few are “oldies” but still great.
On the pure topic of leadership, two books stand out for me:
The Leadership Challenge by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey
On Personal/Professional Self Improvement:
Leadership and Self Deception by The Arbinger institute
The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz
The Charisma Myth by Olivia Cabane
On creating your vision:
Start with Why by Simon Sinek
On some out of the box thinking:
The Dream Manager by Mathew Kelly
“Leadership development is self-development. The instrument of the musician is mastery of the instrument. The instrument of the leader is mastery of self.” Happy reading!
