Leadership Messaging: Constituents Perception or Your Reality

In your world where your brain is swirling with an endless number of items, you may want to occasionally pause to take a breath, clear your head, and make sure the messages you are sending are as clear to the recipients as they are in your head. It is up to you, the leader, to ensure others receive the message the way you intend, regardless of the different ways they may perceive it. If unsure, just ask questions of a few constituents and hear from them exactly what they heard from you.

 

For example, let’s pretend you had a meeting and the topic was your vision of where you are taking the company over the next 3-5 years. The question sounds something like this:

 

“Hey Mary, remember last week when we had our meeting and I talked about my vision for the next 3-5 years, I am checking to see if I was clear in what I communicated so if you don’t mind share with me what you heard. “  

 

If there is the slightest deviation then don’t hesitate to circle back and communicate with more clarity to everyone who attended that meeting. Take the time to remain mindful of how important your leadership is and the messaging that accompanies it.
